Ice-free streets & sidewalks in action!

November 4th, 2008

In case you haven’t seen it in action yet, the new and improved F Street is really, really amazing. The new and improved F Street was part of the Dena’ina Civic and Convention Center development. The goal of the improved F Street is to provide a modern urban pedestrian link that connects Anchorage’s major public facilities and employment centers, including the Egan Center, Town Square Park, the Performing Arts Center, City Hall and the new Dena’ina Center as well as the Atwood Building and its associated new parking facility, the Linny Pacillo Parking Center.

The best part? The streets and sidewalks are all heated, keeping snow and ice from building up. Here they are in action after a recent snowfall:

AWAIC Summer Solstice Festival 2007

June 18th, 2007

This is a summer festival held each June to benefit the Abused Women Aid in Crisis program. It takes place in Town Square and features live entertainment and many different craft & food booths selling unique, made-in-Alaska gifts, including the ever popular, brightly colored AWAIC T-shirts. It’s a great opportunity to have a great time and help a great cause.

The 2007 AWAIC Summer Solstice Festival was on the most beautiful day of the summer. The sun was out, the temperature was in the high 70s, and tons of people came downtown for the fun.

It was totally spamalicious!

March 19th, 2007

Those of you who made it to the 2007 Heart of Anchorage Awards know what I am talking about: the event (hosted by Mr. Whitekeys) was an absolutely spam-tastic evening with good food, good friends and lots of laughs.

The Heart of Anchorage Awards showcase what is happening Downtown, and give everyone an opportunity to acknowledge and celebrate the people, businesses and organizations that have contributed to making Downtown Anchorage a more vital and vibrant place to live, work and play!

This year’s event was the biggest and best Awards ceremony ADP has ever seen! Thanks to everyone who made the event possible and to the 400+ individuals who came to the event.

The ice is still standing

March 1st, 2007

In case you haven’t been down to check it out already, the ice sculptures in Town Square are still standing. Granted, some of them have deformed a bit, but they are still beautiful.

The kids were swimming like salmon…

July 13th, 2006

If you walked through Downtown last Monday, you probably caught a glimpse of kids swimming like salmon, stomping like bears and hopping like rabbits at Peratrovich Park.

The youngsters were there for the weekly Music for Little Ones event in Peratrovich Park, part of the Anchorage Downtown Partnership, Ltd. Summer in the City program. This event – held every Monday from 12noon – 1:00pm at Peratrovich Park – is a family-friendly event that has developed quite the loyal following. The event takes place on Mondays.

The event incorporates music, movement and play designed specifically for preschool aged children and their parents. The performers are Diane McIntyre and Rick Miller of Music a La Carte and The Right Connection.

Music for Little Ones takes place from June 12 though August 14. The event is held in Peratrovich Park on the corner of 4th Avenue & E Street.

Downtown getting greener!

June 30th, 2006

You may not have noticed, but Downtown Anchorage is getting greener. And no, I don’t mean the plants in Downtown – I’m talking about the light poles!

Anchorage Downtown Partnership, Ltd. recently secured a contract with the Municipality of Anchorage to clean and repaint light poles throughout Downtown – both inside and outside of the DID. The contract with the Muni covers over 224 light poles!

Contracts such as this – and others like ADP contracts to sweep the Army/Navy Store parking lot – represent efforts by the organization to expand and diversify revenue sources, and is a perfect compliment to the services already provided by ADP under the assessment contract.

So next time you are out on the streets, take a second look at that light pole that you normally walk right by. If it is a clean looking bright green color, then you are looking at a light pole painted by ADP Maintenance Ambassadors, one of the many ways in which ADP continues to make Downtown clean, safe and vital.

Aces fever now in Downtown!

May 30th, 2006

I hate to admit it, especially during the Kelly Cup Finals, but I don’t really watch much hockey. Actually, I never watch it.

But tons and tons of cooler Alaskans do, and they’re beyond excited right now as our local team – the Alaska Aces – gets closer and closer to sweeping the finals.

One thing that is very cool – even to us non-hockey fans – is watching a town get wrapped up in team spirit. Take, for example, the wager between Mayor Mark Begich and the mayors of Fresno, CA & Duluth, GA over the outcome of the games: the Mayor was so confident in the Aces that he wagered 50 lbs. of Alaska salmon against 50 lbs. of chocolate covered raisins (from Fresno) and 50 lbs. of peanuts (from Duluth.)

More impressive than the Mayor’s bet, however, is the Mayor’s efforts to post a commemorative banner in Downtown displaying the slogan “Our Team, One Goal” and the names of all 24 players. The banner is on the sky bridge at 900 W. Sixth Avenue between the PAC and the Egan Center.

No they aren’t mutants…

Early last week, workers installed several Rachelle Dowdy sculptures in the Key Bank Plaza in Downtown. For those of you who don’t know where it is, the Key Bank Plaza is at the corner of 5th Avenue and F Street, right in front of – you guessed it – the Key Bank building. Read more
