Fletcher’s Restaurant

January 28th, 2011

Fletcher’s Restaurant in the Hotel Captain Cook boasts pizzas and an English Pub feel.  So what does a cheese free woman eat?

Plenty it turns out.

I stopped by Fletcher’s this week because I have only eaten there once before and its one of the 20 restaurants in the 100 Days of Downtown Dining Challenge.

You know I love eating and winning!  With 20 restaurants to try this year I’m really excited.

Fletcher’s has a comfortable, but classy kind of feel and the staff were friendly and helpful.

I ended up with a Steak & Provolone panino minus the cheese.  The sauteed mushrooms and caramelized onions complimented the quality steak.

The steak came cooked as I requested and was mighty tasty.  I was sad to miss out on the horseradish aioli which I hear is fantastic.

I was pretty amazed at how much I enjoyed my sandwich even without two key flavor ingredients.

Fletcher’s has a nice assortment of salads and sandwiches to compliment the pizzas.  Next time I’ll have to go when I can enjoy the bar too!

Fletcher’s is inside the Hotel Captain Cook just off I Street at 5th Avenue.  Stop and try some good food!

Don’t forget to get your Downtown Dining sticker!

Cellar

January 21st, 2011

I like wine.  I don’t know anything about wine.

Problem?  Nope.  Not when I visit Cellar.

Cellar offers a nice selection of wines that you can’t easily find in Alaska and the staff knows wine so I don’t have to.

Cellar should be considered a local treasure.  This is a business that started because the owners like wine and wanted to share that interest.

Good things happen when wine is combined with people who know and love it.

Those of us who know nothing about wine can learn about wine if we want or can be blindly led.  Personally I like having both these options.

Those of you who know about wine have a great place to get good wine and to chat with other knowledgeable wine people.

Located upstairs from Crush restaurant, Cellar compliments the wine bistro by allowing you to buy the wines you enjoy with your meal.  You don’t even have to leave the building.

Cellar also sells a fun selection of beers and a small selection of liquor.  They even have fine cheeses you can pair with your wine.

I like that this is primarily a wine shop, but they have added a few things you might want to pick up if you’re having friends over.

Cellar makes me feel like I’ve stepped off the streets of Anchorage into a nice little wine shop in some friendly foreign country.

The atmosphere is cozy and inviting.  I just might have to start drinking more wine.

Crush wine bistro and Cellar are on 6th Avenue at D Street just across from Nordstrom’s.

Northwind Kites/Kiddywinks

January 12th, 2011

Two fun stores have combined to bring you the best for babies and the best in toys for all ages!

Kiddywinks has moved in with Northwind Kites at the D Street Entrance to the 5th Avenue Mall.

Now you can shop for all that’s new for babies in the same store where you find all your favorite toys and games.

Kiddywinks still has the best baby clothes, furnishings and accessories.

Northwind Kites still has toys, games and kites for all ages.

The convenient location and great selection make this a winning combination.

I love the up to date baby things.  I’m always amazed at what fun things have been invented for babies.

Get the latest in teething items, the cutest in baby fashion and the best quality in baby crib sets.

Northwind Kites is my favorite spot to shop for all the kids in my life…including some of the grown up ones.

Trucks, stuffed animals, things that spin…anything to fascinate a young mind.  Toys from Northwind Kites are always a hit.

Those wind up toys that I have sitting on my desk and everyone has to play with…Northwind Kites carries them.

Just inside the D Street door in the 5th Avenue Mall.
