Downtown Parking Meter rates up March 5

As you may have noticed, Anchorage Parking has implemented a meter rate increase (only the 3rd increase in 24 years) effective March 5, 2008.  All electronic meters have been programmed with the following new parking rates:

2 & 4 hour meters $1.25 per hour | 10 hour meters $0.75 per hour

Anchorage Parking also aims to replace all mechanical (hand-cranked) meters with electronic meters by the end of March 2008.  And during the month of April, the MeterCash card will be introduced for use at most single-space meters.  This card operates much like a gift card, allowing individuals to load funds onto the MeterCash card and then pay for parking at certain single-space meters with a simple swipe.  No more digging for change on the floor of your car!

An up-to-date parking map with current rates and locations is available at www.anchorageparking.com and more information about the rate increase (including comparisons of Anchorage Parking rates to city & national averages) is available here.

Local girl Takes bite out of Big Apple,
comes home to direct Sylvia

ADP Member Cyrano’s Off Center Playhouse invites the public to come celebrate their “Sweet 16 Season” with the classic play “Sylvia.”

“Sylvia” -- the most requested reprise in Cyrano’s 16-year history -- is a witty laugh-out-loud, moving script featuring an AMAZING cast reminiscent of the original cast that captured the hearts of Anchorage 11 years ago.

The play runs 7:00pm Thursdays - Saturdays and 3:00pm on Sundays through March 30, 2008.  Tickets are $17.50 general admission and $15.00 for students, seniors and military.  Tickets are available at the door or through CenterTix.net (263-ARTS)

Anchorage a Top Green City

From the Municipality: Popular Science magazine has rated Anchorage one of the 50 greenest cities in America.

In its latest edition, Anchorage was highlighted for its innovative plan to replace all its street lights with energy-efficient Light Emitting Diode (LED) and induction lights. The project is not only green but will save taxpayers millions of dollars a year when fully implemented.

Over the last three years, Mayor Begich has launched a number of high-profile sustainability efforts including hosting the first U.S. Conference of Mayors Climate Change Summit, retrofitting City Hall building for energy savings, and establishing cardboard recycling collection centers to assist local businesses.

Fairview Community meeting March 22, 2008
on Chronic Public Inebriates & STreet Crime

Over the past several months, the Fairview Community Council has been studying the impacts of Chronic Public Inebriates and Street Level Crime on Fairview and the Downtown Area.

In September, the Council held a Public Meeting (attended by over 130 people) on these issues, followed by an October Public Work Shop. The Council has produced a report and other background documents at the Work Shop, which are posted on the Council's webpage on the Federation of Community Councils website.

As a next step, the Fairview Community Council is sponsoring a follow-up Public Work Shop on Saturday, March 22, 2008 from 11:00am - 2:00pm at Fairview Elementary School. The Council believes it is important to the success of this work shop that community members from both Fairview & Downtown attend and participate.

If you would like to attend, please RSVP to Darrel Hess, Chair, Fairview Community Council (Tel. 350-4590 or email gmpeon@alaska.net)
