Downtown Eatery featured in the Journal of Commerce

Carly Horton from the Alaska Journal of Commerce did an excellent write-up of one of Downtown’s up and coming restaurants, Ginger.

Horton gave the restaurant 3 out of 4 stars for the excellent service, the warm and relaxing dining area, and refreshing menu. Said Horton: “My dining companions and I agreed it would be a great place to go after work to have drinks and appetizers with business associates or friends.”

Dark Horse Goes Green

ADP Member Dark Horse Coffee has always tried to be eco-friendly, by recycling and using ceramic cups for nearly 10 years. Now they have taken the next step by switching all paper and plastic cups to 100% compostable Eco Hot cups and Corn plastic cups.

The Eco Cup is a hot cup made of paper but unlike other hot cups, Eco Hot Cups are inner-lined with PLA, a compostable plastic derived from corn.  Corn plastic products look and feel just like regular plastic, but are much more sustainable, are 100% biodegradable and compostable.

Dark Horse Coffee has also made spent coffee grounds and tea leaves available for home composts or gardens. They have made them easily accessible so you can take as much or as little as you want.

To learn more about Dark Horse’s recycling efforts (and their great coffee and food menus) please visit their website.

Title 21 Rewrite Community Meeting

From the Municipality: Title 21 is the law governing land use within the Municipality of Anchorage.  Last rewritten in 1969, with 35 years of piecemeal changes, it is hard to read, interpret and use.  The rewrite—underway for the past six years—brings the land use code in line with the Municipality’s comprehensive plan, Anchorage 2020.

We encourage everyone to attend a community meeting on Thursday, June 5, 2008 to learn about the Title 21 Rewrite using a new on-line tool, the status of the completed chapters and where they are in the official review process.  Learn where to provide input to decision makers, the chapters currently being developed and when and where to provide input.

WHEN: Thursday, June 5,2008 from 7:00-9:00pm
WHERE: The Anchorage Museum at Rasmuson Center (121 W. 7th Avenue)
WHAT: Find out what the Title 21 Rewrite means to you as a property owner, a developer, a business owner, or a resident concerned about the future growth and improvements of our city.

For more information contact the Planning Department at 343-7921 or via email.

Christensen Drive Water Upgrade Project

The Anchorage Water and Wastewater Utility (AWWU) will replace four sections of water distribution pipeline along and near Second Avenue in late summer 2008.  Replacement of this pipeline will reduce maintenance and repair costs associated with unscheduled breaks in the aging cast iron and galvanized iron pipes.

The 1,290 linear feet of line to be replaced is located between E Street and Christensen Drive along Second Avenue; in the alley west of Christensen Drive; between Second Avenue and the alley along E Street; and in the alley west of F Street between Second Avenue and Third Avenue.

The project will interrupt water service to area businesses and residents, and disrupt traffic patterns during construction.  Businesses and residents will be informed of water interruption dates in advance and temporary water service will be provided.  A traffic control plan will be developed to minimize impacts.

There will be a public meeting on the project from 3:00 - 6:00pm on Wednesday, June 4, in Room 155 at City Hall (632 W. Sixth Ave.)

If you are unable to attend the meeting, have questions or comments, or wish to have your name added to the mailing list for project updates, please contact Anne Brooks, P.E. at 272-1877 or via mycomments@brooks-alaska.com
