You don't want to miss the holiday displays downtown this Winter!

The second Sunday of every month AT&T sponsors a free day at the Museum. With all the wonderful holiday decorations and displays I decided this was the time to take my friend and her kids to the Museum.

The kids were amazed by the toy displays. Duncan, who is 5, could have spent hours looking at the 1935 toy army soldier’s display. Both kids had a great time trying to find the mouse in each room of the play house. They took turns naming each kind of animal in the 1903 Humpty Dumpty Circus display.

After going through all the displays we headed to the kids section of the Museum and traced animal pictures, drew on the white boards that are already framed and put on a brief play on the stage wearing the owl capes before presenting a puppet show at the puppet stage.

You may have missed the free day this month but you don’t want to miss the holiday display. It was fun for kids of all ages and there is a lot to keep small minds and hands busy at the Museum.

Then we were off to the Hotel Captain Cook to see the Ginger bread Village. Wow! It is amazing that those adorable houses could all be made out of food! The kids were fascinated. The smell was delicious and we all agreed it was hard not to take a bite out of one of the many houses. We had to walk around the display multiple times to be sure we didn’t miss any of the intricate details.

You might recognize some of the names on the buildings in the village. There is the familiar Scrooge and Marley and Orso as well. It was fun and free, but you may want to take money to buy some sweets after. I know we sure wanted something to eat after smelling all that chocolate and ginger bread!

Well, it didn’t look like they were going to do it, but the Municipality has opened E Street between 5th and 6th Avenues for the winter.

E Street, as you recall, was one of the streets getting a makeover this past summer with new pedestrian amenities and - most importantly - heating elements to keep the sidewalks ice-free. The project was not completed, however, before the first snow fall, so they had to fence it off and shut it down for the winter.

Luckily, the city was able to get it opened back up so that people no longer have to drive down to B Street before being able to turn north off of 6th Avenue. It’s only one car width wide and it’s not paved, but opening E Street is really a smart thing to do for getting around downtown over the winter:

And, in related news, we recently received a Christmas card from CRW Engineers, part of the team that worked on the design of the E Street improvements. I got a chuckle out of it:

And the inside:

Dianne's fulfills all my restaurant needs. Good hearty food when I want something to fill me up, a nice salad or soup when I want something light and, most importantly, the appropriate ending to whatever meal I chose.

When I think of a nice place for a healthy lunch with a little variety I think of Dianne’s Restaurant. Located on the first floor in the Atwood Building at 7th & E there are always two soups (one vegetarian) to chose from and a variety of sandwiches and specials. The bread is homemade and everything is fresh & yummy.

Today’s choice included a Rueben Panini. Then they had a Thai salad special. I ended up with the turkey sandwich with avocado. I would have gone for the California wrap since I have a weakness for bacon, but I can’t have the ranch dressing. Since there are so many options with sandwiches, soups, and specials I can always find something that fits my mood.

The great thing about Dianne’s is that although I go there for the healthy lunch variety I also go for the brownies. Dianne makes a brownie that is somewhere between cake & fudge. Once I get it in my mind there is no other brownie that will do.

She also makes wonderful crisps, pies and cookies. Today I had to have the three berry crisp. Mmmmm. I have a theory that anything that has fruit must be healthy. I like this theory. Don’t feel the need to correct me.

Since I value a restaurant for their desserts as much as their main menu items the dessert variety is important to me. Dianne’s fulfills all my restaurant needs. Good hearty food when I want something to fill me up, a nice salad or soup when I want something light and, most importantly, the appropriate ending to whatever meal I chose.
