The Tony Knowles Coastal Trail was built in the 1980s and since then had not received significant trail surface rehabilitation other than basic crack repair. The Tony Knowles Coastal Trail is one of Anchorage’s most important assets enjoyed by residents and many visitors. For more than 25 years, the trail has weathered Anchorage’s harsh weather conditions relatively well, but several areas have deteriorated to the point of needing significant repair. Fixing the trail surface is necessary to protect this asset for the future.

Project Summary

Seven (7) miles of the Tony Knowles Coastal Trail will be getting a surface make-over this summer between mile post 6.6 and 2nd Avenue! The trail WILL BE CLOSED in phases during construction. Please refer to the Trail Closure Construction Schedule for more information. Parks & Recreation will regularly post alternate travel routes and construction updates on Facebook and Twitter.

The rehabilitation of the Tony Knowles Coastal Trail is funded in part by a grant from the Anchorage Park Foundation and the Municipality Of Anchorage 2012 Bond Funds. In 2011 a one-mile segment of the trail was successfully resurfaced just south of Point Woronzof. The 2013 project is a continuation of a multi-year effort by Parks and Recreation to rehabilitate the popular trail. Included in the rehabilitation will be repairing several longitudinal cracks or “crevasses” that present hazards to all trail users, including bicyclists, walkers, runners and in-line skaters. Bridges will also be resurfaced and repaired as necessary.

Access during construction

For safety reasons, there will be no access on the closed sections during construction. Portions of the trail are somewhat isolated, not connected to major roadways or transportation corridors. This circumstance along with its proximity to the airport runway, AWWU’s water treatment facility, the bluff, and the Alaska Railroad Corporation, poses significant detour challenges. During the phased summer-long closure, Parks & Recreation asks that recreational trail users utilize a different Municipal trail and that trail commuters employ an alternate route.

Significant trail events such as the Alaska Run for Women (June 8, 2013), the Mayor’s Marathon (June 22, 2013) and the Big Wild Life Runs (August 18, 2013) will be accommodated during the phased construction process. Event coordinators are encouraged to contact Parks and Recreation prior to their scheduled event to verify trail status and route. This construction project presents a temporary inconvenience to all users, but the trail surface improvements accomplished will benefit our community for many years. As mentioned above, we will be posting alternate routes and construction updates on Facebook and Twitter; for additional assistance contact (907)-343-4135.

Each summer Anchorage blooms into the “City of Flowers.” Our municipal greenhouse grows over 76,000 plants and close to 1400 hanging baskets. As an admirer of flowers, residents or businesses can help to maintain this program by “fostering” two hanging baskets.

Fostering the flower baskets costs $300, and represents the total cost of planting, growing and maintaining these two baskets. Donors are rewarded for their contribution with a metal plaque custom printed with their name or business on one of the downtown poles. By fostering the flower baskets, we can ensure the future of the “City of Flowers” program while bringing color and beauty to our streets.

Kobuk Coffee Company is full of treasures.

Kobuk Coffee Company is full of treasures. Great teas, fine china, old fashioned candy and don’t miss the bake shop.

The smell of Samovar tea fills the Kobuk Coffee Company. Visitors are invited to try a sample of tea as they explore the hidden treasures throughout the store.

Kobuk Coffee Company is located in the historic Kimball Dry Goods building at 5th Avenue and E Street. The shop specializes in coffee, tea and china.

You can purchase a wide variety of teas in bags or loose leaf form and they have quite a selection of fine china to serve your tea as well as enjoy drinking it.

The store has a wonderful collection of old fashioned candy.

For me the real treasure is hidden in the back of the store. Here you will find the bake shop.

I believe the old fashioned donuts from Kobuk Coffee Company are the best I have ever eaten. As someone with a sweet tooth I will say I haven’t had anything from this shop that wasn’t amazing.

Fresh soup is made daily and you can pick up simple sandwiches here also.

Oh! The cookies, the cakes, the lemon meringue…but the old fashioned donuts will always hold a special place in my stomach.

Kobuk Coffee Company also offers an old fashion tea party. It is recommended reserve for this special event at least two weeks in advance.

This is the full deal! Cucumber sandwiches and scones. Actually you can pick from a variety of sandwich choices and can even get them cut in shapes to go with a theme if you like.

You can also choose from a variety of desserts and can pick a theme.

Of course they use the fine linens and the best china for such a party.

You can visit Kobuk Coffee Company on the web, but you really want to stop by the shop and take in the wonderful aroma of tea and fresh things baking.

Kobuk Coffee Company is on the corner at 5th and E Street.

Quilted Raven has always awed me with the wonderful collection of patterns and materials for making quilts.

As someone who limits herself to sewing on buttons, but only in an emergency, I am always impressed with people who can sew.

Quilted Raven is like visiting a beautiful foreign country. I don’t speak the language, but with art you don’t have to speak the language to appreciate the value.

I love that local artists have created quilt patterns that can be purchased. There are also fabrics created by local artists.

A lot of amazing and fun stuff for quilt makers and quilt maker admirers.

Now Quilted Raven has expanded! The added space is adding yarn. Not your average yarn, but unique yarn in amazing colors and materials.

Did you know the Alaska Zoo sells camel hair yarn?! It was much softer than I expected camel hair to be.

The variety of yarn is astounding!

There are also a lot of fun buttons. It made me think I might be willing to just sew buttons on things for fun.

Quilted Raven is located on G Street between 4th and 5th Avenues. Visit the Quilted Raven website or friend them on Facebook.

The Anchorage Museum always has something interesting happening.

Arctic Flight A Century of Alaska Aviation shows the deep connection Alaskan’s have with flight. This wonderful exhibit has something for everyone.

The history of flight in Alaska is long and storied. Many brave pilots gave everything to get Alaskan’s to their destination or to deliver their supplies and mail.

This exhibit includes a full size Stearman biplane and many examples of the kinds of equipment pilots used. From tundra wheels to flight suits and survival kits you will find all kinds of history.

This exhibit is co-curated with the Smithsonian National Air and Space Museum and includes objects from several Alaskan museums. The Smithsonian has a wonderful write up about the exhibit which is linked to the Anchorage Museum Facebook page.

Current exhibits also include Portrait Alaska. A series of portraits by Alaskan photographer Clark Mishler who set out to take a portrait a day. After four years of taking photos of people he randomly encountered this exhibit shows the diversity and character of Alaskans.

As a long time Alaskan it was fun to recognize some of the people and to see the variety of things Alaskans enjoy. It was like looking through a family album. Some of those family members are familiar and others are doing things that are familiar. I recognize the connection if not the face.

Mishler has a gift for bringing out the personality and relationships among those he photographs. It is a wonderful collection.

In addition to many wonderful rotating and permanent exhibits the museum hosts an array of activities for all ages. Check out the Museum website or their Facebook page to keep up on what is happening each week.

Anchorage is lucky to have such an amazing museum. Take time to visit the museum on C Street between 6th and 7th Avenues.

Summer hours are from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. daily.
