Aces fever now in Downtown!

I hate to admit it, especially during the Kelly Cup Finals, but I don’t really watch much hockey. Actually, I never watch it.
But tons and tons of cooler Alaskans do, and they’re beyond excited right now as our local team – the Alaska Aces – gets closer and closer to sweeping the finals.
One thing that is very cool – even to us non-hockey fans – is watching a town get wrapped up in team spirit. Take, for example, the wager between Mayor Mark Begich and the mayors of Fresno, CA & Duluth, GA over the outcome of the games: the Mayor was so confident in the Aces that he wagered 50 lbs. of Alaska salmon against 50 lbs. of chocolate covered raisins (from Fresno) and 50 lbs. of peanuts (from Duluth.)
More impressive than the Mayor’s bet, however, is the Mayor’s efforts to post a commemorative banner in Downtown displaying the slogan “Our Team, One Goal” and the names of all 24 players. The banner is on the sky bridge at 900 W. Sixth Avenue between the PAC and the Egan Center.
