Crush

Crush, the wine bar on 6th Avenue, has become the new hot night spot in Downtown. Since I’m not a night spot person I wanted to see what they have to offer for lunch. I would have liked to have made it a wine focused lunch but my boss seems to think I should return to work from lunch sober and able to function.

It just seems wrong to visit a wine bar for lunch & not try the wine. Maybe I’m insulting the wine gods. That seems like a bad idea. I just want to be clear it is my bosses fault if the wine gods are insulted.

Crush has a nice variety on their lunch menu. Gumbo is served daily and a soup of the day is offered also. When we visited the soup was asparagus bisque. My friend tried it and found it enjoyable. I have had the gumbo before and would recommend it. Just the right amount of spice for me. Enough to add flavor but not so much that you burn all day after eating it. There are a variety of salads and sandwiches.

My lunch buddy has had delicious grilled cheese options at Crush before and decided to try the apple and cheese sandwich. This ungrilled version included avocado and a pile of lettuce with some onion. If I could eat cheese I’m sure I would remember the type of cheese. I just remember that it sounded mouth wateringly good & I was told it really was. It was huge. We ended up calling for back up. The companion that joined us agreed that the sandwich was fabulous.

Since I’m a non-dairy person I look for menus that provide me with options. Crush does well for the non-dairy and the vegetarian appetite. (Except for desserts. They were all dairy filled.) I ended up with the BBQ beef sandwich, which was the daily special. It could have used a little more flavor, but was good. The staff are friendly and helpful. It struck me that these people enjoy what they are doing and want me to enjoy it too. That is a nice feel to get in a restaurant.

I enjoyed the visit & would return. The atmosphere and friendly staff are worth going back for even if I can’t have the wine with lunch.
