Renovation Celebration

August 28, 2009 Written by: Ruth

The Town Square Remodel is finally done!  To celebrate Anchorage Downtown Partnership, Ltd. and the Municipality of Anchorage are throwing a party.  Parties are always a nice way to head into the Labor Day weekend and this one contains fun and free food!  From noon to 6 p.m. on Friday, September 4th there will be things going on in and around Town Square.

Steller School and Covenant House are busy creating sculptures that will be on display in the new East Plaza of Town Square from noon to 6 p.m.  These student are designing freestanding sculptures made with found objects and are designed to move and make sound.  This project is called “Whistle and Whirl”.  The Alaska State Council on the Arts has helped fund this cooperative project and local artists Jannah Sexton Atkins and Ron Naanes are holding workshops with the Steller and Covenant House kids to oversee and support their creativity.   With the artists guidance the kids will get to learn a little about art and use their own concepts to create.

The area on E Street between 5th and 6th Avenue that has been a headache for the last two summers is FINALLY finished and will be closed off (because, let’s face it you aren’t used to having it open yet anyway) and an Artist Fair will be held on the street from noon to 6 p.m.    Local artists will be there to sell their own work.  All locally made art only.  If you missed the G Street Art Fair this summer you may not realize how talented our local artists are.  Come see for yourself.

On F Street under the nice canopy that was erected over the sidewalk between 6th and 7th Avenues there will be a Farmer’s Market.  So you have missed all the wonderful markets around town because you are just never in the right place at the right time.  Now all you have to do is come out over your lunch hour and you can stock up on fresh Alaska grown veggies and even sign up to order food boxes for the winter!  From noon to 6 p.m. local farmers will be selling the best of their crops right downtown on the sidewalk!

From noon to 2 p.m. Hector Ortiz will be performing with some of the members from his Latin band.  Hector is always a crowd favorite.  This will be behind Kobuk Coffee Company near the East Plaza.   From 4 to 6 p.m. the 9th Army Band Arctic Rock will be entertaining the crowds from the main stage in Town Square.  You won’t want to miss this group.  They are talented and a lot of fun.

I’m always drawn to free so this whole event is right up my alley, but to add to the fun there is free food!  From 4 p.m. to 6 p.m.  There will be free hotdogs, cokes and cookies!  You will want to get there early because I’m sure the line will form quickly.

Is there a better way to end the summer than enjoying some fun art and a free concert with a free hotdog?  It sure sounds good to me.
